Frederick Kumi, a Ghanaian national who goes by Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng or Abu Trica on social media, has been charged by a federal grand jury in the United States for allegedly masterminding a sophisticated romance scam network that defrauded elderly American victims of over $8 million, according to a recently unsealed indictment from U.S. prosecutors.
The 31-year-old Swedru resident is accused in the indictment, which was returned on December 11, 2025, by a grand jury in the Northern District of Ohio, of taking part in a criminal enterprise that has been using deceptive online tactics to create fictitious romantic relationships with vulnerable seniors across the United States since 2023. According to the prosecution, the organization took use of these connections to force victims to transfer substantial sums of money and valuables under false pretenses.
Court filings state that the alleged conspiracy started with the fabrication of online personas, many of which were created using artificial intelligence techniques, that preyed on the emotional weaknesses of victims. After establishing trust through frequent phone calls, emails, and chats, the defendants reportedly developed deep, personal digital relationships before requesting money for fictitious crises like medical expenses, travel expenses, or fictitious investment opportunities.

Prosecutors claim that after victims submitted money, it was initially delivered to accomplices in the US before being moved to partners in Ghana and other places, hiding the earnings and making it difficult for law enforcement to track down the illegal proceeds.
Federal accusations against Kumi include conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and a forfeiture specification related to the purported proceeds of the scheme. He might spend up to 20 years behind bars if found guilty.
However, U.S. officials emphasized that he is deemed innocent unless proven guilty at trial and that an indictment is merely a charge. The prosecution is being handled by the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. McDonough directing the case. Authorities praised all cooperating agencies for their contributions to the inquiry.

The lawsuit is part of the Elder Justice Initiative, established under the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act of 2017, which aims to prevent financial abuse and scams targeting older Americans. Prosecutors said the case highlights the growing threat presented by cross-border cyber fraud operations that use sophisticated technology to defraud and financially ruin elderly people.
